STUDY PLAN

Tutoring is very intensive and efficient compare to lessons at a class room. So instead of taking 3 or 4 German classes per week at a school you can set up a medium intensive study plan with only one private lesson per week.

If you decide to take on lesson per week you also need to consider extra tome for homework. For every lesson you will get eat least two exercises. Each exercise comes with an audio file you have to study as well. A good amount of time to finish your homework is 1 1/2 hours per exercise including finishing audio exercises. So two hours per lesson to finish your homework is the average.

In case you decide to take two private German lessons per week you would need to study at least two or three afternoons to cover your homework on top of your actual German lesson. If you want to take two lessons per week I would recommend using one of the two lessons for conversation only.

HOMWORK

Why is one German lesson per week enough? There are two reasons: efficiency and homework. Let’s talk about your homework first.

You need to be able to cover your homework on top of the actual lesson. While at some class rooms students spend a lot of time for quietly working with their text books, your tutoring session is 100 percent interactive. We will focus on practicing your German skills full time. Text book exercises and audio exercises will be done by you at home. This means if you take one German lesson per week you end up studding between three and a half and five hours per week.

About efficiency: this is a complex topic but to make it short: private German lessons are up to 10 times more efficient than a class room lesson. One reason is that you spend 90 percent of your private German lesson interacting in German if you use the right tutor. In a class room the actual time you use German boils down to 5 percent max.

The second reason for the very high efficiency of tutoring are bilingual exercises and teaching techniques. While most schools, especially "Goethe Institute" teaches strictly in German only, in my lessons you will not waste much time with dictionaries and frustrating exercises you don't understand. Exercises are bilingual, and I will explain Grammar if English if necessary.

CONVERSATION

All the grammar we cover at the lesson will be constantly "used" and applied by you. This means you will use everything you learn by talking to me and answering questions in German. While grammar is important as it helps you to speed up your learning process it is only useful if you instantly know how to apply it.

Why the conversation partner matters: In a class room the only one you can talk to is your teacher or your class mates. Both are bad conversational partners. While the teacher does not have enough time to chat with you, class mates on the other hand are even worst partners for a conversation because they simply make the same mistakes as you do. Instead of learning you are actually just copying bad pronunciation and wrong grammar.

With the right tutor (make sure it's not a school teacher who is just tutoring part time) you talk in German all the time! This is the major advantage of tutoring versus class room lessons.

DURATION

If you start form the scratch (A1) and you take one class per week and you do all the homework carefully it will take up to 5 or 6 months to reach a very confident A2 level. To reach B1 takes about one year (one lesson per week). This can be easily done while keeping your professional work life running.

What does A2 actually mean: A2 level means it will be easy for you to ask and answer questions and hold a conversation in German to various topics. You will be able to express yourself in present tense, future tens and past tense, and you will be able to use all different verb forms (as reflexive and separable verbs) as well as dependent clause structure and conjunctions as "if, because, even though" etc.

In top of this, as tutoring is 100 percent conversational, your proficiency and your oral confidence will be much higher compare to the same level completed at a class room. In short: You save a lot of time and money to reach a higher level of proficiency.
